Question: How Old Do You Have to Be To Run a Cleaning Business?

Today’s question comes from somebody on the internet they are anonymous we have no idea who they are.
But they’re asking this question “How old do you have to be before you start a housecleaning business?”

Answer: You’re Too Young To Own A House Cleaning Business if…

too young if you can't handle customersI like that question because the answer is you have to be old enough to be responsible for customers. That’s how old you have to be.

I don’t know if that’s 18 years old, or 26 years old,  or 50 years old.
You have to be old enough that you are mature enough that you can handle the customers that are going to come your way. Now what I mean by that is,
when you are young, there’s a tendency to be locked in your own little world.

And so, you think the whole world revolves around you. Okay, that’s too young to own a house cleaning business.
If you think that “I’m going to get out there and the customers are going to do what I say because I’m the boss.”

You’re too young to own a house cleaning company.

Now, I say that because with experience comes maturity.

So, if you get out there and you’re too young and you realize that you’re back talking to your customers. And you’re talking smack behind their back. Or you’re being irreverent or disrespectful to them, that’s going to come with experience because you will get fired.

You’re Too Young if You Get Fired And Don’t Realize The Reason is You

And then you’re going to say “Wow I got fired. What happened?” Okay, well what happened was you didn’t treat the customers with respect.

too young if you keep getting fired. 3d man pointing at you

I get this every single day and people are baffled they lost 7 customers in one week and they want to know “Why did that happen?”
Okay, there’s one common denominator. It’s you.

Now, I don’t say this to be disrespectful to you, but I want you to be aware that if you live in a world where you think you are in complete control of the attitudes and the emotions and the expectations of your customer then you’re too young to own a housecleaning business.

You’re Too Young If You Don’t Understand The Customer Is Your Paycheck

too young if you don't realize your customer is your paycheck, 3d man holding moneyBecause the customer is your paycheck. So, when they make wild crazy demands they might think that that’s an alignment with how they’re supposed to behave, it’s not.

We don’t expect customers will disrespect us and boss us around, and micromanage our work.
And so if you’re old enough that you can manage those behaviors by creating a precedence and setting boundaries, then you’re old enough to own a business.

As you get fired you will learn like “Hey that didn’t work out for me. So, what can I do differently for next time?”
But if you start out your business understanding that “The customer is my paycheck,
the customer is where my money comes from to help me pay all of my other bills.”

If you understand that, then you’re old enough to own a house cleaning business.

You’re Too Young If You Think You Are

So, the housecleaning business is awesome, because you do not need a college degree. You do not need to be a certain age. They don’t say you have to be 18.

I know a housecleaner that’s younger than that, and her parents drive her to her house cleaning appointments and they drop her off. She’s not even old enough to drive.
I know another girl who rides her bicycle to the people in her neighborhood and she has a little basket and it has all of her cleaning supplies in it and she cleans houses.

There’s no special age if you’re old enough to be respectful to customers and you’re responsible enough to collect your money, and to make sure that you show up on time and all of the things that are required to own a business you can own a business at any age.

In the house cleaning industry, you can be any age.

You’re Too Old If You Fail to Help Those That Are Too Young

I know one woman who is a grandma and she takes along with her, her two granddaughters who are young. They’re like 14 and 15 years old. too young if you can't work as a team, 3d characters pushing a puzzle piece
And she’s grooming them to own her house cleaning business when she retires.
Those girls show up every single day, on time. They’re homeschooled. They do their schooling in the evening, they clean houses during the day.

I think it’s an amazing opportunity to train a young entrepreneur how to start a business.
And of course, they have guidance. They have their grandmother, and she’s the voice of reason. But she’s training them already.

(They’re bonded and insured and everything. I mean it’s awesome.)

So, there’s no particular age this is a business where the rules of entry are very low. And age is one of those low entry points.

I don’t know how old you are, but you know what? You’re probably old enough if you’re old enough to read and write to me you’re probably old enough to own a business so I say knock yourself out. Go make this happen.

You’re Too Young If You Think You Can’t Fail

too young if you keep getting fired. 3d man kicking other man out the doorAnd you might fail, we all fail.  We all start out at ground zero. We all fail. Failing is part of success.

As you fail, use those as learning lessons to propel you forward.
Learn from every experience if even if it’s you getting fired. If you get fired say “Wow that didn’t work.”
“What did I do wrong?”

Look at yourself first. Don’t blame the customer. Look at yourself first, and if it’s something you can change, you can move on then, so that you don’t have 7 cancellations in one week.
I know house cleaners that have had the same customers for 12 and 15 years. Okay? they’re doing something right.

Use Every Experience Good or Bad To Propel Your Business Further

If you’re losing a lot of customers you’re probably the common denominator. too young if you can't learn from your experience, 3d man waving saying thank you

It’s probably you.

Make this work. You’re old enough.

I’m giving you permission. You’re old enough to have a housecleaning business.

So, go do this and keep me posted. I want to hear how it goes for you.
