Today’s question comes from a woman minority business owner. She asks, “As I am building my team, is it important that I hire ethnically diverse people? I am in a minority as well, so is this important? “
Wow, that is a fascinating question. My answer to you is, it is not necessary as an equal opportunity employer to have a diverse cast.
Answer: Diversity For House Cleaning Staff?
It’s not so much having one of every different particular ethnicity. It’s more like having a diverse cast of opinions, and personalities, and work ethics.
Imagine everyone in your company was the same. They dress the same, they are the same age, and they have the same educational background. Imagine they have the same beliefs and ideals.
What this means is that they will respond in a similar way. Do you want this? Yes, it is helpful. But I would encourage you to have a diverse cast.
A Diverse Cast Encourages Differences
I have had many people ask me why I hire individuals who disagree with me to be in my workforce. Well, the reason I do it is that I don’t want to hire a bunch of yes people.
Sure. It would be nice if they were like me and they all thought exactly like I think. But then wouldn’t some of us be unnecessary?
Benefits of a Diverse Cast
Employees come from different upbringings and have different sets of ideas and work ethics. When they disagree with me, there’s usually a valid reason.
As a business owner, I need to embrace our differences instead of fighting them. Then we are all better off.
I can look at the differences in my employees. And I can say, “Teach me what you know.” I can then make changes with my employees.
My customers are not going to be just like me either.
Diverse Thought Cast
I can have a variety of different people on my team instead of limiting my growth. That makes us all grow further as our world expands.
My suggestion to you would be not just to have a diverse cast, but have a diversity of thought as well.
The Open Road
In my business, we call that the open road. If you have ever traveled across the country you might know what I am talking about.
When you are in a car and in the middle of nowhere, all you see is wilderness. Wide, open space. It is the open road.
You want to be on that open road in your business. You can do this by hiring a wide variety of personalities. Instead of just going down that straight path, you now have choices and options.
Embrace the Differences
So, have as a diverse a cast as you can. Embrace their ways of thinking to open your mind to their differences. Think about the ways you can embrace their differences. There are different cultures, nationalities, religions, beliefs, and philosophies. This will not only enhance your employee experience but also your customer experience.
