Question: Hire Me! I Want to Be a House Cleaner

Hi there. I’m Angela Brown and this is Ask a House Cleaner. This is a show where you get to ask a house cleaning question and I get to help you find an answer. Today’s question comes from a girl who is not a house cleaner and does not own a house cleaning company.  But there is her question: “I want to get into the house cleaning business and I want a company to hire me.  How do I go about finding a house cleaning job?”

Hire Me beautiful girl begsAnswer: Hire Me, I’m a Reliable Cleaner

I love this question because every house cleaner I know would love to go, “Pick me, pick me. We want you to come work for my company.” There are places that house cleaners hang out.  I belong to a private Facebook group that is just for house cleaning business owners.  They all own house cleaning companies, and we’re all looking for good help to hire. Good help is kind of hard to find. When I say good help, we’re looking for someone that’s reliable.  Someone that’s going to show up every time on time.

Someone that’s going to come with their happy attitude.  Somebody that’s going to work hard and going to do an amazing job for our customers.

Hire Employees That Have a Great AttitudeHire me, Happy house cleaner cleaning house

Because, as we hire employees, those employees are extensions of our company.  When customers meet our house cleaners they will get someone professional and reliable.  Even though each cleaner is individual, we feel that it’s imperative to train each one. We make sure to do a great job and keep our house cleaners up to speed because every cleaner represents our brand.

Knowing that, if you are going to hire on with a company, you want to hit those same key points.  I would jump on social media and message friends.  Say, “Hey, I’m looking to get into the house cleaning business. Do any of you know or have a house cleaner that you work with right now that you could refer me to.” I would ask for referrals. In the house cleaning business, we have to get good at always asking for referrals.

Ask your friends, “Who do you know who’s in the house cleaning business that would hire me?” Then here are the key points that you want to say: “I am a hard worker and I love cleaning houses. I’m great with people and I’m reliable.” Because those are going to be the main things that are going to get you hired, and attitude will be the main one.

Hire Me I Have a Good AttitudeHire Me happy male worker

In my company, we have always hired first for attitude, second for skill. I can train you how to clean houses, but training you to show up every day looking and feeling positive, well that’s all on you.  If you’re a Negative Nelly and every day you’re like, “Wah ah ah ah,” that leaks out onto your customers. Over the years this has been a problem in some of the other companies that I’ve worked with.  Some house cleaners show up to work with personal and emotional problems and dump them on their clients.  After a while, the clients get exhausted.  They’re like, ” Man, just find me a happy maid. I don’t need all the negative chaos in my home every time.”

If you are a Negative Nelly, don’t advertise that. When you go to a customer’s house to do the job, leave it behind. Lock that in your car. When you show up to the customer’s house, be happy. Show up with the best that you have to give. It will make your job a whole lot easier because what you project bounces right back to you like a boomerang.

If you show up at a customer’s house and you’re super happy and you love life and things are good, guess what? They’re like, “Right, things are good. Things are happy. It’s all alright.” They’re not complaining at you because you’re happy.  But when you show up like the world is falling apart or you’re angry and upset, then they’re like “Yeah, me too. Uhhhhh.” Those people will project it right back. Then you leave and you’re like, “Man, I hate these people. They’re so negative.” Guess what? You started it.

Make It Easy For People to Hire You Hire me, Happy house cleaning man washes dishes

If you want to be part of a house cleaning company, the first thing they want to know is are you a happy person. Second, are you a good worker? Do you have a good work ethic? It’s going to be helpful if you highlight things like: I’m honest. I’m trustworthy. My customer comes first. If you say things like that in a job interview, your chances of getting hired are high.  Because there are a bunch of house cleaners out there who are willing to train you. They also want to take a chance on somebody who is honest, good and kind.  Someone that loves their customers and has a happy attitude.  Those are the things that I would recommend.

Social Media Helps

You can put out a little memo to your Facebook friends and to your Twitter accounts or SnapChat.  Whatever you use for social media.  This will help to get the word out because we all know house cleaners or friends of house cleaning companies. You won’t put a message out for long before you get a call. Somebody will call you and say, “Hey listen, we’re thinking about hiring somebody.” Then the next thing is this: Be willing to work on a trial basis.

Say, “Hey listen, give me a try. Let me work for three weeks. See what you think. If you think I did a great job, then you can hire me permanently.” If nothing else, then that will give you three weeks of experience.  You can turn that experience around and take it to your next company.  Be willing to go through their training and learn what they will be willing to teach you.

All right, that’s my tip for today. Alrighty, I will see you again. Until I do, leave the world a cleaner place than when you found it.
