How Do You Choose a Company Name?
How do you choose a company name that gets you found in the search engines? House cleaners right now, from the COVID pandemic, have lost their jobs, they’ve changed their jobs, and they’re getting involved in the house cleaning business.
And they want to know, “Can I use the name for my company, like Vacuum Lines or Dust-B-Gone?” All right, I’m going to stop you right there, and I’m going to say no because if somebody searches for house cleaning in Matthews, North Carolina, Dust-B-Gone, none of those words are going to pop up in the search engine.
Google Wants the Best User Experience
Now, Google is a publicly-traded company and they are the largest search engine on the planet. And their goal for their shareholders, and for their users, and the people that buy their ads, is to provide the best user experience. So, let’s say that your company name is Dust-B-Gone or Vacuum Lines, somebody searching for house cleaning, and Matthews, North Carolina, is not going to pull up your company name.
Now you’re going to end up spending a fortune in added dollars, trying to become known in a market where, because you had this creative, zany name, no one could find you, okay?
So, for choosing a cleaning company, I know lots of people get really hung up on, “I got to have the perfect name.” You don’t have to have the perfect name, okay?
You Are Your Brand
So, I want you to think of this. Your company is not your brand, you are your brand. And your company is one of the assets that your company owns, that you own, okay? So, you are the brand and then your business or different elements of your business are your assets, okay?
This is just one of your assets. Don’t give it so much importance that you can’t get started because you got to have the perfect name and all that stuff. Not true, okay? What we’re going to do is, we’re going to play to the search engines, because from here through infinity, people are going to find you on the search engines.
Here’s how they do it. They go to their computer and they type in, “I need a house cleaner in Matthews, North Carolina.” Or, “I need a house cleaner in 28105.” Which is the zip code in Matthews, North Carolina, right?
You Have to Have House Cleaning in Your Name
So, what pops up? Dust-B-Gone? No, that doesn’t even come in because there are no keywords in there, that would trigger that as part of the search, right? So, what you want to do is, you want to say what it is that you do. If you do house cleaning, the words, housecleaning, should be inside the title of your business name, housecleaning.
And then if you want, you can tag on, Matthews, North Carolina. Or you can type in “House Cleaning in 28105“, which is the zip code where you live, right? So, what happens is, somebody, sits down, “I need house cleaning, 28105.” Guess who pops up? Boom, you popped up in organic search because the name of your company was found right there in the search engine, right?
Tag the Country Code That You Live in at the End of Your Name
You want to go and find the country code that you live in, a tag that onto the end of your business name, you’re with me so far? That way, when the search engine finds your domain name, and the domain name will always carry the most weight of authority.
So, if your company name is, Housecleaning Matthews 28105, what happens is, it’s going to find that as the search. And it’s going to say, “Wait a second. I think this is the best search. This matched the words that someone was searching.” Right? Then they’re going to look for clues on your website.
Do you do house cleaning? Do you offer different packages? Move-in, move out cleans, bi-weekly cleans, all those things. Then they’re going to say, “Wait, I think I found the best user experience.” And they’re going to dish you up to that person looking, right?
The Goal is to Be Found By Customers
So, the goal is to be found, not to be cute. All right. So, I want you to stop for a second, and think about what is it that you offer, and where do you offer it, and can you add that to your domain name? So, your business name then becomes your domain name .com, .us, .au, .ca, whatever it is, depending on the country code that you live in.
I want you to focus on this because this will save you a bunch of money when it comes to advertising. Because if the search engines can find you, lickety-split, in organic search, there you are.
And then the other companies that have names like, forgive me, Dust-B-Gone, are going to have to pay a boatload of money to try to compete with you because there you are, front and center, and then the other company that has the weird creative name has to go, “Well, wait a second. They’re stealing all of our business. We have to pay for ad dollars, and we have to do a higher ad spend, and we have to become seen as well.”
Make a Smart Name Choice to Save You Ad Money
And they’re going to spend a boatload more money than if you were smart about the choices that you used in the beginning. So, what do you do? Let’s say that it’s condo cleaning in Miami, the name of your company would be Condo Cleaning in Miami and then .com or wherever, right?
In the US, it’s .us or .com. That would be the name of your company and the name of your URL. That will save you a whole bunch of money in marketing, and it will make it easy for the search engines to find you.
