The attitude of gratitude is a concept that is super important to abundance in your business! It’s psychology 101, you reward the behaviors you want more of. Having this mindset of being grateful no matter what is one of the keys of our abundance series, so let’s talk about it!
Listen: The Attitude of Gratitude
Watch: The Attitude of Gratitude
Hey there, I’m Angela Brown, and this is Ask a House Cleaner. This is a show where you get to ask a house cleaning question, and I get to help you find an answer. You can find this and 400 other answered questions in this series on our YouTube channel.
The Attitude of Gratitude is Huge for Abundance
The attitude of gratitude is one of the biggest keys to abundance. One of the things I get asked a lot is, Angela, how do I build my business from ground zero all the way to being a wildly successful company? And the answer is there are a lot of mind shifts along the way that have to happen so that you don’t sabotage your success when you arrive.
Because if you don’t recognize it and you’re not expecting it and you’re not prepared for it, when it arrives, you will sabotage it. You will turn it away and you will push it away because you’re not prepared for it, right?
You Have to Go Through the Process to Be Successful
So if you want to be wildly successful, you have to go through the steps along the way. It’s like growing up. You start out as a baby. You don’t go from being a baby to graduating from college. It doesn’t happen. You have to go through the steps along the way.
Once you go through the steps and I promise some of them are painful, right? Gawky teenage age, all that stuff, you have to go through the steps in order to get to the end result.
So this is going to be the same kind of thing. We’re going to go through some weird, awkward moments together to go from beginning a business to wild success and growing a cleaning empire. This is the abundance series.
The Behaviors You Reward are Repeated
Now, one of the things that is important that we understand is the attitude of gratitude. And it goes back to psychology 101. The behaviors that you reward are the behaviors that are repeated. So for example, let’s say, and I’m going to stop for just a second and share a scenario with you, let’s say that your mother gets sick. And we don’t spend a lot of time with mom, but she’s sick. We’re going to go over and we’re going to see her in the hospital.
Well, how come we didn’t spend time with mom while she was healthy, right? What you did is you rewarded behavior that was sick. Now, she’s taken a turn for the worst. So now, we’re going to bring balloons and flowers. We don’t give her balloons or flowers when she’s well, only when she’s sick.
Don’t Celebrate Sickness and Reward Negative Situations
And in the back of her mind at an unconscious level, she thinks, oh, if I’m to be sick, my family comes and they visit me. And they bring me flowers and they bring me balloons or whatever, right? And so then, we go and we visit mom and we spend time with her. Get well cards, we call, we check in, we pay all this attention to her being ill.
And so the next time at an unconscious level when she needs our attention or she needs help or she wants to spend time with us, what happens is she takes ill. She gets sick because that is the behavior we reward.
Does that make sense? We did not pay attention to her when she was well. We paid attention to her when she was sick. So unconsciously, she’s got to get sick to regain that from us, right? That is the psychology of the behavior you reward is what’s repeated. We’re going to take that same philosophy.
Celebrate Positive Moments
In my household, we’re very keen on this. So, we don’t celebrate sickness at all. We celebrate wellness. So someone’s sick, we say, hey, call me when you’re well. I want to come see you when you are well. And we visit people when they’re well and we celebrate their wellness, not their sickness, right? It’s the same thing with the attitude of gratitude.
So if something comes to you, even if it’s bad, we don’t want to focus on what’s bad. Oh, I can’t believe this happened to me. My life sucks. This is terrible. Because what happens is you give that attention. And so now, more of that is coming back to you.
We talked about in another one of these abundance series about how when you post something on Facebook and it’s like, I can’t believe that my customer did this. And then you get a whole swarm of people that come to you and you’re like, oh, I know, right? Whatever you put out is what comes back to you.
I Love to Thank My Customers for Their Business
So the attitude of gratitude is thank you so much for whatever this is, right? I love thanking my customers for their business. And you’re like, why would you thank them for their business? You’re the one that provided the service. I thank them because they put food on my table. They paid my bills, right? I am so grateful.
And on every single worksheet, every single one that I’ve ever had in 30 years, at the bottom there’s a little white space, and I like to make a handwritten note. “Thank you for your business. I appreciate you.”
And I have long-term customers because what’s happened is I rewarded that behavior. I was rewarded that I appreciated they were my customers. It is the attitude of gratitude. So as stuff starts coming back to you, we talked in another one of the abundance series about receiving.
Be Grateful Even When Nothing Came Back Yet
When the receiving comes to you, it’s hard to be grateful even if it hasn’t come back to you yet. But we know it’s coming. Why? Because we believe in faith, not fear, which is another one of our abundance episodes, right? Faith, not fear. I believe it’s coming back. Therefore, I’m already grateful. I’m putting it out there.
And all that can come back to you is what’s on that path, which is gratitude. Gratitude is the key that unlocks the door.
Be Clear About Your Expectations
And when you process that feeling and you put that out there with your request, all of a sudden, it’s like asking the Google question. Now, it starts coming back to you. Did you mean this? And you will recognize it because you were clear about what it was you asked for. You are clear about what it is you’re expecting. And you are already grateful that you have received it.
Now, the unconscious mind doesn’t know if you’ve already received it or if it’s on its way back to you, but it knows it’s in process, right? It’s in process. It’s like the Google search coming back. Did you mean this? Not a problem. We’ll keep trying until we get it right. And it will keep giving you answers as long as you ask, right?
Be Grateful for Everything That Comes Back to You
So, the answer is when you start receiving. Now that we’re starting to receive, we want to be grateful for every single thing that comes back to us. And I want you to practice this. There’s going to be a lot of stuff that you don’t recognize. And there’s going to be stuff that you’re not really grateful for, but I want you to be grateful for it anyway.
For example, let’s say that you have a troll on the internet that says mean things to you. Instead of you getting all huffy and fussy and whatever, in rewarding that behavior, I want you to say thank you for your opinion, for your interest, for your feedback, whatever.
Thank you, right? Thank you because you’re going to stay in this frame of mind. Because in a minute, something will happen, yay, where you still get your way. And then, you’re free to move on. And no, it didn’t affect you. It affected them. It didn’t affect you. You are free to move on, right?
Carry the Attitude of Gratitude With You Everywhere
So the attitude of gratitude, you got to carry it with you everywhere you go. It’s got to be the first thought of your day when you wake up in the morning. It’s got to be the last thoughts of your day before you go to bed.
I promise you this. If you will change your feelings from being a victim, and my life sucks, and everything is going to heck in a handbasket to that attitude of gratitude, all of a sudden, you put it out there and it’s positive.
And that’s what you get coming back to you. So, one of the secrets to abundance is the attitude of gratitude. It’s going to be uncomfortable as you try to move from wherever you are to a place of gratitude, but I promise you this. It is so worth the journey and it is worth the reward that is on the other side waiting for you.
