Hey there, I’m Angela Brown, and this is Ask a House Cleaner. This is a show where you get to ask a house cleaning question, and I get to help you find an answer. You can find this and 400 other answered questions in this series on our YouTube channel.

Where Do You Start in House Cleaning

Where Do You Start in Your Cleaning Business, Man Trying to Work with DistractionsWhere do you start if you’re going to build a house cleaning business from the ground up? A very interesting topic from a brand-new house cleaner called in and asked this question.

Can you help me; give me tips, give me advice, give me how much I have to put in my budget? Like, how much money I need to build my cleaner production industry in Louisiana or another state? Do you have any range of money? And do you have any tips you can give me to make a case study for my project?”

Where Do You Start a House Cleaning Business

Where Do You Start in Your Cleaning Business, Man Thinking and Working on ComputerSo, where do you start a house cleaning business? This is really interesting because there are so many different places.  Firstly, sit down with a pen and paper, or sit down in front of a computer, and start making a checklist.

You can even use Google Keep, which is a checklist format, and then check items off as you go because there are a whole lot of things that you’re going to do. And then, the more you know, the more you learn, and then, the more items go on your checklist.

So, you will never be there as far as achieving your business, in the sense that you will have done all the things you need to do. There will always be something new that you can work on.

What Should Be Your First Focus?

Where Do You Start in Your Cleaning Business, Man Working on BudgetOkay. What do you start on, and what should be your first focus? What we’ve done over at the Savvy Cleaner Learning Library is we have created a business from the ground up. The reason we did it is this. We get a lot of questions where people have already built businesses, and they find that they’re running 20, 30 employees.

They have a whole bunch of houses and they’re traveling all over, and they have cars, and they have all these different things. But some things have fallen through the cracks. And it’s things that either they didn’t know that they were supposed to do. Or they’re things that they overlooked because it didn’t seem like it was important at the time.

Go Back With Your Checklist to the Very Beginning

Where Do You Start in Your Cleaning Business, Woman Working on Computer Taking NotesSo, what we do is we start over from the very beginning. Even if you already have an established business, it’s a great place to start because you will see very quickly some of the things that are required. And you’ll say, “Oh, yes, we’ve already done that.”

Then you’re going to see some things that you haven’t done yet, and you’re going to say, “Well, I was waiting for a rainy day.” But because you did not do that one thing, it’s causing a lot of other problems.

Or even worse, there are one or two little things that you could tweak that would save a lot of time in reinventing the wheel with these other steps that follow it.

Look at Your Business as a System

Where Do You Start in Your Cleaning Business, Man Working on ComputerWhen you start looking at it as a system, like, “If I did this, it equals this, it equals this, it equals this.” It’s like setting up dominoes in a row. If all the dominoes are set up correctly, then when you push one domino, everything else falls into place.

That’s where the automation comes from. It’s setting up a little series of systems that then automate themselves or are easy to hand off to an employee, or a manager, or a lead, or somebody that’s on your team.

So, once you have the system set up, and that’s where the biggest challenges lie, is in knowing what are the triggering events. So, “If I set this up today, it will save these tasks moving forward.”

Have Standard Operating Procedures

Where Do You Start in Your Cleaning Business, Tired Woman Working on Computer at NightThere are a lot of business owners that are grinding it away. They’re spending days and nights, and they’re not getting very much sleep. They’re eating the wrong kinds of foods. And they’re super stressed out because they’re trying to do these extra steps that are actually part of a simpler system. At Savvy Cleaner, we walk you through piece-by-piece of all the different systems, and we help you create those standard operating procedures.

It is a membership, where we have ongoing training. We have ongoing group coaching where you can ask your questions and get those problems resolved. We also have Facebook groups that allow you to go in and talk with other business owners that are going through some of the same things that you are. There are members in there that have been around for a while that can say, “But if you do this, expect this.” They can give you the advice to help prevent you from reinventing the wheel or learning by trial and error. This way you don’t have to make the same mistakes all over again. It’s a great investment in your business if you’re willing to spend the time.

You Have to Be Willing to Spend the Time on Your Systems

Where Do You Start in Your Cleaning Business, Man Reading a BookAnd by willing to spend the time; this is one of those little systems. You can either spend all the time, reinventing the wheel, doing all these weird, crazy things because you think you have it all figured out.

Or you can come over to the Savvy Cleaner Training Learning Hub, and you can figure out, “What are the systems I need to set in place?” And then shortcut those things, template them, and then outsource them so that it is easier for you as you move forward.

Because running a business has so many different moving parts that if you, as a solo business operator, feel like you have to run those areas yourself, it’s going to be exhausting.

Start from the Ground Up and Build a Foundation

Where Do You Start in Your Cleaning Business, Man Cleaning CounterSo, where do you start? There’s no one place to start, but if you were going to start, start from the ground up and build a foundation that everything builds on top of.

Because if you don’t have a foundation, we know this from regular architecture, if you don’t have a very strong foundation that’s been dug deep and wide and has the proper structure in place. Then when you build something on top of it, it falls through and it crumbles. You get sinkholes, and you get shifting and altering of the ground, and then the structure falls apart because it wasn’t set up properly.

We have lots of YouTube videos if free is your thing.  Don’t be discouraged and think, “I have to spend money.” If free is your thing, we’ve got lots of videos on YouTube. We have a podcast; it’s also free. There’s a free book that I wrote which is on Amazon, that you can download and read on any device with a free Kindle app. It’s called, How to Start Your Own House Cleaning Company. So, there are a lot of free options for you. But if you want the structure and the design, and the systems come over to SavvyCleaner.com, and we will walk you through all those different elements so you can build an empire.000 Savvy Cleaner Spacer Bar 2020
