"It's my fault, it's my cleaning business and I take responsibility." As a business owner, you have a choice to take charge of your business and your team.

It’s my fault, it’s my cleaning business and I take responsibility. Wowser – what happened to point fingers and passing the blame? The minute you admit “it’s my fault” is the minute your business takes off.

The concept of “it’s my fault” is owning your own mistakes. It’s saying “it’s my problem. I’m am in control. The buck stops here. I can make a change. I can make a difference, I have the power.”

Hey there, I’m Angela Brown, and this is Ask a House Cleaner. This is a show where you get to ask a house cleaning question, and I get to help you find an answer. You can find this and 400 other answered questions in this series on our YouTube channel.

“It’s My Fault” is the Hardest Thing to Say as a Business Owner

It's My Fault, Man Pointing at HimselfThese will be the hardest words you will ever say as a business owner. You have to change your thinking right now about those three words, “it’s my fault”.

As a business owner, the first thing that you want to do is push blame. It’s a natural, human tendency. It’s ingrained in you to pass the buck. Someone says it’s your fault and you go, “No, it’s not. It’s his fault, it’s her fault, it’s their fault. It’s the economy’s fault.”

Everyone wants to play the blame game.  But the moment that you stop and you say, “It’s my fault.” Then you put yourself back in the driver’s seat and now you are in control. It is one of the most powerful things that you will ever do as far as changing taking ownership of your business.

Facebook Groups

It's My Fault, Man Pointing at HimselfThere are many Facebook groups for different elements of a business. There are house cleaners that jump in our Professional House Cleaners Facebook group to  share ideas and vent, and often we hear“Oh, drat my employee. You’re not going to believe what they did today.”

And there are just mobs of other house cleaners that will jump in and say, “Oh, you should fire that employee.”

This isn’t the case, you can’t just blame the employee for what went wrong, you also had a part in it as their boss.

It’s My Fault, Don’t Fire Anyone

It's My Fault, House cleaner is frustrated bends over sinkDon’t fire anybody yet. As the business owner, you have the responsibility to say, “Well, it’s my fault that I let that employee go out into the field and accept mediocrity as their norm.

It is my fault that I did not train the customers to read our checklists and to have their expectations meet ours.

Every single day, people say, “Well, my customer did this, my customer did that.”

Then other cleaning business owners say “you should get rid of that customer and find somebody who represents and appreciates your worth.”

It’s not the customer’s fault, as the business owner you have to take responsibility for your part in the gap of expectations between you and your customer.

Take Responsibility for the Gap in Expectations

It's My Fault, Wooden figures in a row, one raises his handTake responsibility for the gap in expectations.  Maybe you did not communicate well enough. The minute that you take responsibility is the minute you regain control of the situation.  You have the power to make the changes in your business.

When you’re blaming everyone else for what’s wrong in your business, you are out of control. You are a victim of your own circumstances and you can do nothing about that.

So many house cleaners get out of the business and they’re like, “It’s the economy’s fault. I’m in an oversaturated market. It’s all the other competitors that are out there.”

But when you go back to the root of the problem, it’s your business.

Choose to take responsibility.

It’s My Fault to Change the Training in My Company

Take responsibility to change the training in your company. Take responsibility to educate your customers on how you operate. And take responsibility to show up on time.

Take responsibility to reinvent yourself in a saturated market. Take responsibility to show up and add a little something extra for clients. These are clients who have had bad experiences with other mediocre house cleaners.

Nobody wants to be at fault. But the good news is as a business owner, you get choose your own ending to the story.

Empower Your Team to Take Responsibility

It's My Fault, 3d Man in blue capeYour employees will follow your lead. If you are constantly shirking responsibility they will do the same.

But you lead by example and admit when you are wrong, or make a mistake, and then pivot to fix the problem they will do the same.

Choose which type of company you want to run.

“It’s my fault, and I’m happy to help fix the challenge.”
